WALKING THE WALLS OF DUBROVNIK

On Saturday morning we got up early and headed out to walk the Walls of Dubrovnik. These high walls encircle the old city and it is common for visitors to scale the stairs and walk around the entire city along the castle walls. These walls are well known and often visited partially because it is featured in the HBO Mini-Series, Game of Thrones. These walls protected the city from foreign invaders and are the main reason the city of Dubrovnik is known as 'The Pearl of the Adriatic.'

It was very warm out already at 8 am and there was some hazy smoke in the air -- which made us feel like we were back in California. Apparently, there have been fires burning in Bosnia and this is very common this time of year. The smoke sometimes carries out over the Adriatic.



We were a bit surprised to learn that the cost to get into the castle is about 200 Kuna or $40 dollars per person. But it really is a great activity and climbing all of those stairs ends up being a great workout!

You can see above that we walked about 2 and 1/2 miles -- but we sure climbed a lot of stairs!




LEAVING THE HOTEL EXCELSIOR AND BOARDING THE 'SUNLINER X'

After we finished our big walk, we headed back to the hotel to meet up with the rest of our group and take a taxi down to the Marina where we would board our boat, the Sunliner X, which would be our home for the next 8 days!

We had been on this same boat 3 years ago -- however that trip was in the South of France. The boat is about 120 feet long and has 4 state-rooms and a crew of 6: Captain, two deckhands, two valets and a Chef.




We departed Dubrovnik Marina at about 1 pm and headed out to a nearby Island to swim and relax before lunch.

Hvar

 On Tuesday morning we had a quick breakfast and headed out for a morning hike in Korcula. Susan and I headed up into the hills above the town and through a small park. It felt great to get some exercise and fresh air to start the day . . . After our hike, we got back to the boat and departed for Hvar . Our Captain calls Hvar 'The St. Tropez of Croatia,' so we were excited to see it.  On the way to Hvar we had some white wine and local Oysters . . .  We arrived in Hvar in the late afternoon and decided to go walk around the town. It was very busy and there were LOTS of other yachts parked in the marina. It really did feel a bit like St. Tropez as there were lots of fancy restaurants and gift shops. The next morning we got up and went for a long walk along the Hvar waterfront.

Cruising up the Krka River and Visiting Krka National Park

On Thursday morning most of us got up and went for a swim around the boat or a stand-up-paddle.  After breakfast we headed up the coast to the Krka River. The plan for this day was to cruise up the river to the Krka National Park and meet up with a guide there. The guide would take us on about a 2 hour hike up to the waterfalls. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Dalmatia.  We were lucky to have a gorgeous, sunny and warm day as we cruised gently up the Krka River. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. We learned that the Krka River is brackish in that it has a mixture of salt water and fresh water. The reason for this is that the ocean tides travel as far as 10 miles up the river. There were portions of the river where we could see oyster and mussel farms along the shore. Sipan Island

After we left Dubrovnik on Saturday around Noon, we headed for Sipan , one of 1,100 beautiful islands here off the coast of Croatia. On the way there, we stopped in a cove area to swim and have lunch. Our Chef onboard is named 'Billy' and he is a 23 year old Frenchman. We can't believe he is only 23 as he seems so mature and is able to create amazing meals! Here are some photos from our lunch on this day. We started with an appetizer of Langostine, followed by a main course of Sea Bass with Zucchini.  And, of course we have to have some nice French wine to go along with lunch . . .  And there's always dessert . . .  After lunch we headed to a cove just off of Sipan where the plan was to anchor in the bay for the night. After we arrived in Sipan, Billy prepared dinner for us After dinner, we headed for bed.
